Literary genres is one of those topics that English teachers come back to little by little throughout the year. There are many genres, and lots of ideas about which ones to include. Here is the list I like to use.
Novels and short stories: realistic fiction, historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy, mystery
Traditional stories: fairytale, fable, tall tale, myth
Many types including: couplet, ballad, free verse, limerick, haiku, concrete poem
Traditional categories: comedy, tragedy
Includes: biography, autobiography, personal essay
Many types, including: essay, speech, news article, text book articles
I’ve put it all together in a little poster that I thought might be useful to post in the classroom or even to printout for students’ notebooks. You can download it here: genres.
